As it rose to worldwide prominence in 2007 and 2008, dubstep seemed to absorb and meld with other electronic genres.
Artists such as Scuba merged the overall tempo and heavy bass of dubstep with the slick minimalism and lush keys of Detroit and Germanic techno to killer effect. Other artists, such as the UK's Ikonika, presented an even more radical fusion of styles.
With just a handful of EPs to her name, Ikonika is one of those rare artists who has sketched out a singular vision early in her career.
Her Please EP could be classified as dubstep primarily by virtue of its slow tempo, and, as is often the case, simply by her proximity to the scene itself. The cold, minimal funk of the title track had as much in common with techno, and with early 90s "bleep" music though, as it did with many of the more traditional releases on the dubstep-oriented Hyperdub label. With just a handful of EPs to her name, Ikonika is one of those rare artists who has sketched out a singular vision early in her career - here's hoping a full-length album is in the works soon.
