Hudson Mohawke

Among the most promising of a new wave of downtempo beat artists that emerged in the wake of the dubstep movement, Scotland's Ross Birchard AKA Hudson Mohawke is now known worldwide for his innovative take on US and UK urban sounds.

It might be a stretch to link him to the dubstep movement, actually - Hudson Mohawke's music owes a lot more to American experimental hip hop, including J Dilla and Prefuse73, as well as UK IDM producers such as those on Warp Records.

Among the most promising of a new wave of downtempo beat artists that emerged in the wake of the dubstep movement, Scotland's Ross Birchard AKA Hudson Mohawke is now known worldwide for his innovative take on US and UK urban sounds.

A UK DMC finalist at the tender age of 15, Birchard came to fame through a series of DJ mixes, bootlegs and underground remixes, as well as his collaborations with fellow Glasgownian Mike Slott as Heralds of Change. It was his EP Ooops! on Wireblock Records that really made people stand up and take notice though; over the course of four tracks he layered familiar hip hop and R + B vocals over the most twisted wonky beat structures possible. Subsequently signed to Warp Records, his debut LP, Butter, was well-received by critics and looks to lay the foundation of a successful career for the young producer.
