Bullion

  1. Working by day as a library producer for Channel 4 and the BBC has had an obvious impact on Paul White AKA Bullion's sound.

  2. While his critically acclaimed string of EPs and Strange Dreams of Paul White album could be superficially compared to the squashed beat explorations of artists like California's Flying Lotus, White differentiates himself with the samples, tones and textures he pulls from. It's a uniquely British, eclectic, widescreen approach, drawing from a patchwork of samples and influences, as opposed to the funk-laden sound of his West Coast contemporaries, which is more directly rooted in jazz, hip hop and the American black musical tradition.

  3. When White is at the top of his game - as on single track "Get Familiar" and much of his debut LP - his tracks are not only compelling in a head-nodding kind of way, but sound like nothing else and bring to mind the adventurous turntablism of Brit hip hop legends Coldcut, updated to the sound standards of the late 2000s.
