Armand Van Helden travelled while he was growing up, living in Turkey, Italy and Holland, and listened to music from an early age. At the age of 13, he began producing and DJing, focusing on the hip-hop and freestyle scenes. By 1991, he quit his day job to focus full time on DJing and dance music production for the remix service X-Mix Productions. His first single, "Stay on My Mind" by Deep Creed, was released in 1992 on Nervous Records.
Remixes, including for artists as well known as Deee-Lite and New Order, had become a big part of Armand Van Helden's reportoire, and his bass-heavy mix of the Tori Amos track "Professional Widow" quickly became a house music classic.
The same year saw the release of "Move It to the Left" under the name Sultans of Swing on Strictly Rhythm. But it was his single "Witch Doktor" that became Van Helden's first big hit. Remixes, including for artists as well known as Deee-Lite and New Order, had become a big part of Armand Van Helden's reportoire, and his bass-heavy mix of the Tori Amos track "Professional Widow" quickly became a house music classic.
Other hits like the legendary "The Funk Phenomena" and the filtered disco classic "You Don't Know Me" cemented Van Helden's reputation as one of the premiere producers and DJs in house music.
