Antoni Maiovvi sums up pretty much everything you need to know about his musical proclivities in a single statement on his Myspace page: ‘if you don't like disco, I don't want to know you’.
Maiovvi, actually the pseudonym of Italian producer Anton Maiof, makes electronic disco music that mines the melodic, galloping synths of 80s italo/ hi-energy dance, while giving it a darker twist derived from the soundtrack work of John Carpenter and brooding atmospherics of Goblin and Tangerine Dream. While artists like those on the Italians Do It Better label might use the buzzword "italo disco," it's artists like Maiovvi who actually work within the tradition of the original scene.
Antoni Maiovvi, AKA Anton Maiof, creates electronic dance music that mines the melodic style of 80s italo disco, while giving it a darker twist.
According to his press release, Maiovvi’s music is "akin to the overwhelming horror of the stalked. The sound of dimly lit streets where everyone is at risk. A place of supernatural existential terror where the lines of reality become that of opium blurs."
Maovvi might not be doing the full range of emotion captured on his albums. On 2010's "The Thorns of Love," tracks like the tongue-twisting "The Sigh from the Sky Was A Lie Without Doubt" bring to mind the drugged-up euphoria of late 80s New Order. Still, there is a definite musical style being developed here, one that draws heavily from the past which redefining it in fresh and interesting ways.
